Tanks Built For Long Term Performance
Concept recently collaborated with Queensland based water treatment specialists BioTech Water to deliver a new generation aerobic digestion system for one of the world’s most innovative pet food companies, Real Pet Foods.
Aerobic digestion for the uninitiated is the microbial transformation of organic matter into water, heat and CO₂ in presence of oxygen. Simple enough!
But how does aerobic digestion work?
Aerobic digesters (large tanks), accelerate the natural decomposition process through naturally occurring bacteria. Through a batch sequencing process, the bacteria break down the waste matter producing heat, water and carbon dioxide as by products.
BioTech Water’s technology comprises a two-stage mechanical and biological process to break down the waste matter into sludge. The sludge is then pumped through a proprietary process that utilises naturally occurring microbes and enzymes under controlled conditions.
Using this process, components such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Fats/Oils/Grease (FOG) are removed resulting in clean water that meets municipal effluent discharge standards.
Stephan Coetser, Managing Director of BioTech Water said, “The water produced using our system can be discharged directly to the client’s own sewer point which offers significant cost savings for them but also provides the local water utility with a cleaner effluent that requires less downstream treatment.”
BioTech Water specified the Concept Industrial Modular Concrete tank for the Sequence Batch Reactors (SBR) as they offered a fast build time, superior durability and could accommodate the Sulzer XTA submersible aerator and ancillary equipment.
“We have had prior relationships with tank suppliers, but Concept were able to deliver the complete package, including civil requirements, tank components, waterproofing and multiple penetrations. Their tank structures are built for long-term performance and were ideal for this application”.
Concept Industrial Modular Concrete Tanks are constructed using high quality pre-stressed, precast concrete panels which are manufactured in a controlled precast manufacturing facility and then transported to location. The offsite process involves horizontally casting the panels in specially engineered steel forms, resulting in a superior consolidation compared to vertically poured cast-in-place or on-site precast concrete.
The structural precast concrete panels are strong, durable, require minimal maintenance and are particularly suited to Australia’s harsh climatic extremes.
Real Pet Food’s Project Engineering Manager Ray Ridley said, “We were very pleased with the overall quality and finish of the Concept Tanks, the design and particularly the construction time. The footprint was tight and a high traffic area which meant minimal disturbance during construction was a real bonus”.
Unlike cast in-situ concrete tanks, the Concept pre-cast tank does not require formwork which significantly reduces the build time, offers minimal wastage and safer sites with less clutter.
Concept specialises in design, engineering and construction of precast post-tensioned concrete tanks for the wastewater, resources and aquaculture sectors across Australia.
